There’s a world of agave spirits beyond Oaxaca

A world that doesn’t get nearly the attention afforded that beautiful state. This invitation-only, industry-only trip is a journey across other parts of Mexico, with a goal of showcasing the breadth and beauty of the country and the spirits that are distilled there.

Join us on this six-day journey from Mexico City to Durango, with stops in Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, and Coahuila. Space is limited to eight participants — first-come, first-served. Because space is so limited, participation is also limited, to people working in the hospitality industry.

The purpose of this trip is to educate the educators — to help hospitality workers better understand the importance of bio-diversity and reducing the environmental impact of the growth of mezcal on a handful of communities.

Saturday, January 21

You’ll fly into Mexico City, where El Tigre will host a tasting in the evening. Damian and Raquel source their agave spirits from Damian’s aunt and uncle in Guerrero.

Sunday, January 22

Depart by 8am for Guanajuato, where Mezcal Villasuso and Lucy Pistolas will treat us to a vinata tour, lunch, and a tasting. On to San Luis Potosi for the night.

Monday, January 23

A morning visit to Tomas Nava’s distillery in Centro, then on to Mezcal Peñasco, where De Matachines sources their spirits. Then … Torreon and Ponciano Arriaga 158!

Tuesday, January 24

Head to the 24,000-acre Ultramundo ranch of wild maguey lamparillo outside Mapimí, Durango. On the way we’ll visit a family making sotol and the old mining town.

Wednesday, January 25

We’ll spend a full day exploring that 24,000-acre Ultramundo ranch on ATVs, cook over an open fire, and drink under the big night sky full of shooting stars.

Thursday, January 26

Depart by 8am for Burrito Fiestero in Nombre de Dios. We’ll visit their agave forest, hike to their water source, participate in a planting activity, and visit all four of their vinatas.

The tour concludes the morning of Friday, January 27. You can easily access the Durango International Airport [DGO - General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport] that day to fly home. We’ll arrange transport to the airport from the hotel in Nombre de Dios. If you decide to stick around, we can help connect you with other producers in Durango, or point you to places beyond.

The cost to participate in this trip is US$350 per person, plus you pay for your own flights. Payment must be made two weeks prior and is non-refundable. Need more information? Ask away!
