Agave Road Trip is sponsored in part by Sombra. Sombra is an artesanal 100% Espadin agave mezcal handcrafted in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. Sombra is one of the few mezcal brands that owns and operates its own palenque (distillery), which ensures consistent quality and eco-friendly production methods. Each step of production, from fermentation to distillation, has been reimagined to reduce its environmental impact.

For the Espadin expression, agave are hand-harvested on the steep slopes of the Oaxacan Sierra. The agave hearts are buried in an earthen pit where they slowly roast over hot rocks. The agave are then crushed by a mechanical limestone tahona, fermented with only native yeast, and expertly distilled. The byproducts of the distillation are then up-cycled into adobe bricks to rebuild earthquake damaged homes.

Agave Road Trip is sponsored in part by La Luna Mezcal. “If you’re drinking tequila, even the most expensive tequila, you usually only get to taste blue weber agave that has been processed in an industrial way. If you want to taste the same kind of agave that has been converted into a spirit in an heirloom manner, try La Luna Tequilana. They’ve roasted the agave in a stone-lined earthen oven, milled it by hand using wooden mallets, fermented it open-air in wooden barrels, and distilled it in wood-fired copper stills. Sip it slowly, neat, and experience the taste that created the demand for tequila a hundred years ago. The smaller the sip, the bigger the flavor”.
